Psychology Referrals
Overview
The two main types of psychology available are Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and counselling.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
First-Line Treatment
- 90% of first line psychology
- Useful for depression and anxiety
- ‘Forward looking’ - deals with ongoing symptoms rather than historical events
- First step is usually online CBT - more like an e-learning package
Think Wellbeing
A three step process for patients. Although nominally triaged, patients invariably undergo the same process:
- Online CBT
- Interpersonal CBT
- More intensive interpersonal therapy
NOTE
Think wellbeing is also supposed to be able to refer patients for more specialist therapies (for example in the case of PTSD).

TIP
It is much better for patients to self-refer.
Making Space
Online CBT Service
This is a purely online CBT service run by a mental health practitioner at Pennygate Medical Centre.

- Patient completes first session with the practitioner
- Patient does the rest from home
- Telephone calls at intervals to discuss progress/challenges
Booking: Patients can book in for this at reception
Counselling
Useful for a specific traumatic event that has happened previously, for example:
- Bereavement
- Assault
- Other traumatic events
Self-Referral Required
Patients can self-refer through Bridgewater. Tell them to call 01942 483 483 and ask to be listed for counselling.
