πŸ‘“ Clinical Supervision

Understanding your supervision arrangements is key to a successful placement at Pennygate Practice.

πŸ‘€ Who is Supervising Your Session?

If your clinical supervisor is in, has a session booked, and isn’t the duty doctor, it will almost always be them.

If they are not in, or are working as duty, supervision usually falls to one of the other foundation supervisors:

πŸ’‘ Checking Your Supervisor

You can check how many FY doctors each supervisor is seeing by looking at their sessions in the Appointment Ledger. If there is only one supervisor and 3 FY doctors, you may be supervised by another doctor.

Look for initials or a name at the top of your session on the Appointment Ledger.

πŸ“ž How to Contact Your Supervisor

Each supervisor has their own preferences. Here are the available options:

MethodWhen to UseNotes
SystmOne Instant MessageShort clinical questionsFound under top menu on right-most entry
Phone CallMore detailed questionsAsk supervisor for their number
In PersonComplex or urgent mattersGo to their room and knock

IMPORTANT

Avoid sending patient names in instant messages in case other patients in with your supervisor see them.

TIP

Sean’s suggestion: Use messages for short clinical questions (e.g., β€œhow many days should I prescribe otomize for?”). For more detailed questions, calling is better.

πŸ“… When Should You Contact Your Supervisor?

This depends on both your supervisor and your stage of placement. Your supervisor may want you to contact them:

  • Before making/communicating a management plan to each patient
  • As and when you have problems
  • At the end of each session to run through your patients

Check Your Supervisor's Preferences

You should confirm what your supervisor wants you to do, as this is likely to change over time.

πŸ”„ Other Issues

If something crops up from a previous session, or you have questions about blood tests, documents, or tasks, discuss these at the end of your next session during your debrief.
